Do You See David?

Technology is often talked about as something complicated. People think about the latest gadgets, technical skills, or being “good with computers”.

But for David, technology is something much simpler. It’s part of everyday life.

Like many people, David has routines that help him relax and unwind. Most evenings that means listening to favourite music through his iPad, watching familiar programmes, or simply enjoying some quiet time in a way that feels comfortable to him.

These small routines help David relax after a busy day and enjoy the things that matter to him. They may seem ordinary, but they are an important part of everyday life.

For David, technology is not really about devices. It’s about comfort, familiarity, and having control over everyday choices. Sometimes that means choosing music to listen to while relaxing at home. Other times it means deciding what to watch, when to watch it, or simply enjoying quiet time independently.

At Options, person-centred support is at the heart of what we do. Through opportunities to make choices, pursue interests, and build confidence in everyday life, people are supported to live in ways that work for them.

For David, having the freedom to follow routines that matter to him and enjoy the things he loves helps him feel comfortable, settled, and in control of his own day.

This is about more than technology.

It is about choice, independence, and recognising that the ordinary moments many people take for granted are also part of living a full life.

Because inclusion is not only about access to opportunities. It is also about recognising people’s interests, routines, and the everyday choices that help make them who they are.

A question for all of us

This Learning Disability Week, we’re asking people to look beyond assumptions.

Do you see someone using an iPad?

Or do you also see someone making choices, enjoying favourite music, following routines that matter to him, and living life in his own way?
